UK Mortgage Lending Remains Strong
Net mortgage borrowing by UK households was GBP 5.6 billion in December of 2020, slightly lower than the almost 4-year high of GBP 5.7 billion reached in November, and compared to market forecasts of GBP 5.591 billion. Net borrowing continued to be significantly higher than the average of £3.9 billion seen in the six months to February 2020. Strong borrowing since September has, however, only partially offset weakness earlier in the year as total borrowing in 2020 (GBP 43.3 billion) was below 2019 (GBP 48.1 billion).
