Car production in the UK fell 28.7% year-on-year to 75,756 units in November of 2021, the fifth consecutive month of decline and the worst November performance since 1984 as UK car makers continue to wrestle with the worldwide shortage of semiconductors. Production for both domestic and overseas markets declined, down -18.8% and -30.4% respectively, as 30,487 fewer cars rolled off factory lines. Exports accounted for more than 80% of all cars produced, reinforcing the need for smooth international trade, especially with the EU, as new customs controls with the bloc come into effect on 1 January 2022. Continuing the recent trend, British production of battery electric, plug-in hybrid and hybrid cars took a record share of production, accounting for around a third (32.7%) of all cars made in the month, and more than a quarter (25.5%) over the year-to-date. source: The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders Limited (SMMT)

UK Car Production Posts Weakest November Since 1984
Car production in the UK fell 28.7% year-on-year to 75,756 units in November of 2021, the fifth consecutive month of decline and the worst November performance since 1984 as UK car makers continue to wrestle with the worldwide shortage of semiconductors. UK Car Production Falls for 4th Month
Car production in the UK fell 41.4% year-on-year to 64729 in October of 2021, the fourth straight month of decline and the weakest October since 1956 as firms grappled with the global shortage of semiconductors which led to production stoppages. The weak output totals compared to last year are exacerbated by the closure of a UK car plant at the end of July, a deficit that will impact figures for a year. More positively, production of the latest battery electric (BEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and hybrid (HEV) vehicles comprised 30.9% of all cars made in October. BEV manufacturing rose 17.5% to 8,454 units, meaning that, so far this year, UK car makers have produced more than 50,000 zero emission vehicles, exceeding the total built in the whole of the pre-pandemic 2019.

UK Car Production for September Lowest in 40 Years
UK car production plunged 41.5% year-on-year to 67,149 in September of 2021, the third consecutive month of decline and the worst-performing September since 1982, hampered by the production stoppages caused by the ongoing global shortage of semiconductors as well as the closure of one of the country’s largest plants. Despite the ongoing challenges, production of the latest battery-electric (BEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and hybrid (HEV) cars continues to break records, now representing almost a third (32.3%) of all cars made, equivalent to 21,679 units. It means UK car factories have turned out 158,710 alternatively fuelled cars since January. Production year-to-date remains marginally up, by 3.8%, with 656,776 cars, which has largely been driven by exports with 82.7% of production heading for markets abroad. However, the year-to-date total was down 33.5% over the 2019 performance and 44.1% – equivalent to 517,438 fewer units – less when compared to the five-year pre-pandemic average.
