UK Car Production Falls 11% in April
UK car production fell 11.3% to 60,554 units in April 2022 from a year ago, amid ongoing chip shortages and supply chain issues, exacerbated by the Ukraine crisis. Soaring energy prices and slowing global markets also pressured the car industry, while supply chain disruptions in Ukraine, a major hub for automotive parts, has left many car makers scrambling to find alternative sources. "The UK car industry is exposed to a host of issues that are undermining output and competitiveness," SMMT CEO Mike Hawes said, calling for government relief akin to the kind given to energy-intensive industries such as steel to cope with surging electricity costs. Six in 10 cars exported in April were headed to the European Union, a 5% rise year-over-year. Production meant for the UK grew for the second month in a row, jumping 60% from a year earlier, when the pandemic had dented demand.

UK Car Production Drops 33.4% YoY in March
UK car production declined 33.4% year-on-year to 76,900 units in March 2022, as production volumes remained constrained by the ongoing global shortage of semiconductors and other components. The latest figure also marked the weakest March since the financial crisis in 2009, and was primarily driven by a 41.4% decrease in production for overseas markets. Exports to the US saw the greatest decrease during March, dropping by -63.8% year-on-year, largely due to the closure of a major plant in Swindon in July 2021 which manufactured for the US market, while exports to the EU declined by -24.5%. Despite this, seven in 10 cars (72.5%) made in the UK last month were built for export, with the EU taking the majority (67.0%), followed by the US (8.2%) and China (6.6%). Production for the domestic market, meanwhile, increased modestly by 4.3%, equivalent to 864 additional units.
