Thailand imports mainly raw materials and intermediate goods (around 56 percent of total imports). Fuel accounts for 19 percent, parts of electronic appliances for 11 percent, materials of base metal for 9 percent, and chemicals for 5.5 percent. Machinery, equipment and supplies such as computers and mechanical represent 25 percent of total imports, and consumer goods account for 8 percent. Main import partners are Japan (20 percent of total imports), China (15 percent) and the European Union (8 percent). Others include the United Arab Emirates, Malaysia and the United States.

Thailand Imports Fall More than Estimated
Imports to Thailand plunged 12.0 percent year-on-year to USD 22.75 billion in December of 2022, reversing the 5.6 percent growth a month earlier and compared with market estimates of an 8.0 percent fall. This was the largest drop in arrivals since October 2020, as domestic demand deteriorated amid intense cost pressures. For the whole year, purchases jumped 13.6 percent from the same period in 2021. Many of the materials Thailand imports are assembled into completed goods and shipped out again.

Thailand Imports Unexpectedly Rise
Imports to Thailand unexpectedly rose by 5.6 percent year-on-year to USD 23.65 billion in November of 2022, missing market forecasts of a 0.8 percent fall and rebounding from a 2.1 percent drop in the previous month. The ministry said that many imports will be used for producing goods to be shipped out again. For the first eleven months of the year, arrivals jumped 16.4 percent from the same period in 2021.
