Russia Retail Sales Contract More than Expected
Russia's retail trade fell 3.4 percent from a year earlier in March of 2021, following an upwardly revised 1.5 percent drop in the previous month and more than the expected 1.3 percent decrease. It was the twelfth consecutive month of declines in retail activity amid the pandemic crisis. Sales continued to fall for both food (-6.0 percent vs -3.0 percent in February) and non-food products (-0.8 percent vs 0.1 percent). On a monthly basis, retail sales jumped 9.2 percent, after a 2.4 percent drop in the previous month. Considering the first quarter of 2021, retail activity shrank 1.6 percent over a year ago.

Russia's retail trade fell 1.3 percent from a year earlier in February of 2021, following a 0.1 percent drop in the previous month and more than an expected 1.1 percent decrease. It was the eleventh consecutive month of declines in retail activity amid the pandemic crisis. Sales fell for both food (-1.1 percent vs -1 percent in January) and non-food products (-1.4 percent vs 0.9 percent). On a monthly basis, retail sales went down 1.9 percent, after a 21.5 percent plunge in the previous month. Considering the first two months of 2021, retail activity shrank 0.7 percent over a year ago.

Russia Retail Sales Fall Less than Expected
Retail sales in Russia edged down 0.1 percent year-on-year in January of 2021, easing from a 3.6 percent drop in the previous month and compared to market expectations of a 3 percent fall. It was the tenth consecutive month of declines in retail trade. On a monthly basis, retail sales slumped 21.5 percent, after a 17.3 percent jump in December.

Retail sales in Russia declined 3.6 percent year-on-year in December of 2020, extending a 3.1 percent fall in the previous month and above market expectations of a 2.5 percent decrease. It was the nineth consecutive month of falls in retail activity. On a monthly basis, retail trade jumped 17.3 percent, recovering from a 1.2 percent drop in November.
