Mexican Retail Sales Rise Less than Expected
Retail sales in Mexico rose by 3.4% from the previous year in February of 2023, easing from the 11-month high of 5.3% from the previous month and missing market expectations of a 4% increase. Retail activity fell for food and drink (-4.5%), hardware stores (-4%), and household goods, computers, and appliances (-1%). On the other hand, sales rose for paper articles (11.1%), textile and accessories (5.1%), and online retail (8.7%).

Mexico Retail Sales Rise the Most in 11 Months
Retail sales in Mexico rose by 5.3% from a year ago in January 2023, the most since February 2022, picking up from the 2.5% increase in the previous month and well above market expectations of a 3% advance. Retail was higher for textiles, clothing, and footwear (18.2%), automobiles and parts (11.8%), and paper articles and stationery (6.3%). On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, retail sales in Mexico jumped by 1.6%, the most since March 2021.
