Macau Raises Key Rate by 75Bps to 2.75%
The Macau Monetary Authority hiked its base rate by 75 basis points to 2.75 percent on July 28th 2022, pointing to the fourth rate hike this year and reaching the highest level since July 2019. The move tracked a hike by the same margin in the US Federal Reserve funds rate and following the similar size of rate increase by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority as the territory is under the linked exchange rate system with the Asia's financial hub. The rate hike came as Macau's gaming operators face low tourist arrivals after authorities in the region in mid July shut all casinos for a week, the first time in over two years, in a bid to control a rising number of COVID-19 infections caused by the Omicron variant. The government has previously been hesitant to close casinos due to its mandate to protect jobs. The industry employs most of the population directly and indirectly and accounts for more than 80% of government revenues.
