Kazakhstan's gross domestic product shrank 2.6 percent from a year earlier in 2020, compared to a 4.5 percent growth in 2019. Services output slumped 5.6 percent and industrial output shrank 0.4 percent. Meanwhile increases were recorded in production of goods (2 percent), construction (11.2 percent), agriculture, forestry and fisheries (5.6 percent).

Kazakhstan's gross domestic product shrank 2.8 percent from a year earlier in the January to September 2020 period, the biggest contraction since 1999, amid the pandemic crisis and the adverse effects of coronavirus-induced lockdowns from mid-March to mid-May, and then from early July to mid-August. Services output slumped 6.1 percent, while growth was recorded for construction (10.5 percent), agriculture, forestry and fisheries (5.0 percent), and industry (0.2 percent).

Kazakhstan Economy Slips Into Recession in Q3
Kazakhstan's GDP shrank 2.8 percent year-on-year in the third quarter of 2020, following a 1.8 percent decline in the previous period. It was the second consecutive contraction and the strongest since the second quarter of 1999, amid the pandemic crisis and the adverse effects of a lockdown that lasted from early July to late August. Services contracted at a faster pace (-6.1 percent vs -5.4 percent in Q2), in particular transportation & storage (-17.1 percent vs -14.7 percent); wholesale & retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (-9.5 percent vs -10.5 percent) and accommodation & food services (-3.6 percent vs -2.1 percent). Also, goods-producing growth slowed (2.2 percent vs 4.1 percent), as lower oil production due to OPEC+ cuts led to a sharp contraction in mining activity (-2.2 percent vs 2.2 percent).

The biggest segments within services are: wholesale and retail trade and repairs of motor vehicles and motorcycles (15 percent of total GDP); transport, warehousing, information and communication (10 percent); real estate (9 percent) and professional, scientific, technical, administrative and support services (7 percent). Industry contributes 34 percent of the wealth; construction 7 percent and agriculture, forestry and fishing 5 percent.
