Japan Overtime Pay Rises in 4.8% January
Overtime pay in Japan rose 4.8% year-on-year in December 2021, rising for the ninth straight month and accelerating from a 2.9% gain in November. The data, which is an indicator of strength in corporate activity, showed sharp increases of non-scheduled pay in living-related & personal services (19.1%), accommodations, eating & drinking services (10.6%), manufacturing (10.5%), real estate & goods rental (8.5%) and transport & postal activities (7.6%). On the other hand, overtime pay decreased in mining & quarrying (-8.3%), electricity, gas, heat supply & water (-4.8%) and compound services (-0.9%).

Japan Overtime Pay Rises for 8th Straight Month
Overtime pay in Japan rose 2.7% in November from a year earlier, posting an annual growth for the eight straight month and accelerating from a 2.3% increase in October. The rise in overtime pay signaled strong corporate activity as Japanese firms ramp up production following the pandemic-induced slowdown. Overtime pay increased mainly in real estate & goods rental (9.1%), construction (8.8%) and manufacturing (8.3%); while it decreased mainly in mining & quarrying (-17.3%), compound services (-13.7%) and accommodations, eating & drinking services (-9.5%).
