Household spending in Japan rose by 1.2% in real terms from the prior year in October 2022, easing from a 2.3% increase a month and compared with market consensus of 1.0%. This was the fifth straight month of increases in personal expenditure but the weakest pace in the sequence, amid a slowdown in spending for transport (1.5% vs 8.8%), furniture (4.9% vs 14.3%), and culture & recreation (8.0% vs 12.6%). In addition, expenditure fell for food (-0.4% vs 1.2%), housing (6% vs -5.6%), and education (-19.0% vs -9.1%). On the flip side, spending for clothing picked up sharply (24.9% vs 7.3%), amid a rebound in spending for both In addition, expenditure fell for both fuel, light & water charges (2.2% vs -1.6%) and medical care (3.9% vs -1.2%).
