Exports from Indonesia surged 58.76 percent from a year earlier to USD 16.6 billion in May of 2021, above market consensus of a 57.49 percent jump and after a marginally revised 52.02 percent rise in the prior month. This was the strongest growth in exports since January 2010, amid a further recovery in global demand and rising commodity prices. Sales of non-oil and gas exports soared by 58.30 percent to USD 15.66 billion; while oil and gas exports jumped by 66.99 percent to USD 0.94 billion, amid higher shipments in crude oil. Considering the first five months of the year, exports grew by 30.58 percent from the same period of 2020.

Exports from Indonesia surged 51.94 percent from a year earlier to USD 18.48 billion in April of 2021, easily beating market consensus of a 41 percent rise and after a 30.47 percent jump in the prior month. This was the strongest growth in exports since 2010, amid a further recovery in global demand and rising commodity prices. Sales of non-oil and gas exports soared by 51.08 percent to USD 17.52 billion; while oil and gas exports jumped by 69.60 percent to USD 0.96 billion, amid higher shipments in gas. Considering the first four months of the year, exports grew by 24.96 percent from the same period of 2020.

Exports from Indonesia surged 30.47 percent from a year earlier to USD 18.35 billion in March of 2021, the highest growth since July 2017, easily beating market consensus of an 11.74 percent rise and after a marginally revised 8.50 percent gain in the prior month, amid a further recovery in global demand and rising commodity prices. Sales of non-oil and gas exports soared by 30.07 percent to USD 17.45 billion, while oil and gas exports jumped by 38.67 percent to USD 0.91 billion on the back of crude-oil products (500.70 percent). Considering the first three months of the year, exports advanced by 17.14 percent from the same period of 2020.

Exports have been an engine of economic growth in Indonesia. However, after reaching a peak in 2012, it have been in a steady decline due to lower commodity prices and dwindling global demand. Major exports are: oil and gas (12.4 percent of the total exports, of those gas 6.9 percent, crude oil 4.3 percent and oil products 1.2 percent); animal and vegetable fats and oils (14 percent); and electrical equipment and machinery (10.45 percent). Other exports include: footwear, part of such articles (3.4 percent); garments not knitted (3 percent) and ores, slag and ash (2.5 percent). Major export partners are: the United States (11.6 percent), China (10 percent of the total exports), Japan (9.9 percent), India (8.8 percent) and Singapore (7 percent).
