Guyana runs systemic trade deficits due to low exports of its vast natural resources. The country is a net exporter of sugar, gold, bauxite, aluminium, rice, shrimp and timber. Guyana is dependent on imports of fuel, manufactured products and machinery. Main trading partners are the United States (17 percent of exports and 21 percent of imports) and Trinidad and Tobago.
