The number of people registered as out of work in mainland France decreased by 16.8 thousand from the previous month to 3.558 million in March of 2021, still above pre-pandemic levels of about 3.2 million but below an all-time high of 4.307 million hit in April 2020, when the country was under strict lockdown measures to curb the spread of COVID-19. Among the different age categories, unemployment in the population aged 25 to 49 declined by 11.9 thousand to 2.099 million, and that in the younger population was down by 4 thousand to 0.493 million. Also, unemployment among those aged 50 or more dropped by 0.9 thousand to 0.966 million. Compared with the same month of the previous year, the number of people registered as jobless rose by 63.5 thousand.

The number of people registered as out of work in mainland France rose by 22.9 thousand from the previous month to 3.577 million in February 2021, remaining well above pre-pandemic levels, as new coronavirus-induced restrictive measures hit the labor market. Unemployment among people aged 25 to 49 increased by 12.2 thousand to 2.114 million, and that among young people was up by 5.3 thousand to 0.497 million. Also, unemployment among those aged 50 or more advanced by 5.4 thousand to 0.966 million.
