The number of people in work in the United Kingdom increased by 179,000 to a new record high of 32.72 million in the three months to February 2019, slightly below market expectations of a 180,000 gain. Year-on-year, employment rose by 457,000 due entirely to more people working full-time (up 473,000 on the year to reach 24.15 million). Part-time working showed a small fall of 15,000 on the year to reach 8.57 million. The UK employment rate was estimated at 76.1 percent, higher than for a year earlier (75.4 percent) and the joint-highest figure on record. Estimated employment rates for men and women aged between 16 and 64 years have been generally increasing since early 2012. For December 2018 to February 2019, the employment rate: for men was estimated at 80.5 percent; it has not been higher since December 1990 to February 1991; for women was estimated at 71.8 percent, the joint-highest since comparable records began in 1971.
