Exports from Thailand slumped 22.5 percent year-on-year to the smallest since April 2016 of USD 16.28 billion, in May 2020, compared with market expectations of a 6.4 percent fall and after a 2.12 percent gain in April. This was the steepest yearly decline in overseas sales in over ten years, due to the severe impact of the coronavirus pandemic, with shipments falling for cars and computers. In contrast, gold shipments jumped 735%. Thais are heavily invested in gold and will sell whenever prices go up, with the metal then exported. A ministry official said that outbound shipments this year may not drop much further, but could take a long time to recover. Considering the first five months of the year, exports fell 3.71 percent.
