Consumer prices in Tanzania went up 0.6 percent from a month earlier in December 2019, after rising 0.5 percent in the prior month. The slight uptick in monthly inflation was attributed to the price increase for both food and non-food items. Some of the food items that contributed the most were maize grains (2.8 percent), maize flour (4.8 percent), wheat flour (1.2 percent), sorghum grain (4.2 percent), sorghum flour (2.7 percent), meat (1.2 percent), vegetables (2.2 percent), beans (2.3 percent) and cassava (2.8 percent). The non-food items with largest contribution to the rise were footwear for women (1.5 percent), maintenance and repairs of private saloon cars (3.0 percent), kitchen and domestic utensils (1.3 percent), personal care such as hair dressing for women (1.1 percent) and school bags (2.3 percent).
