Wholesale prices in Taiwan increased to 1.19 percent in March 2019 from 0.8 percent in the previous month. Prices advanced further for manufacturing products (0.57 percent from 0.2 percent in February), namely petroleum & coal (4.03 percent from -0.74 percent); electrical equipment (2.45 percent from 1.95 percent) and miscellaneous (4.50 percent from 4.12 percent). Also, cost of agriculture, forestry, fishing & animal husbandry dropped less (-0.44 percent from -4.56 percent), of which farm products (0.72 percent from -4.71 percent) and poultry & livestock (1.83 percent from -3.08 percent). Meanwhile, cost of quarrying & mining slowed (10.04 percent from 12.11 percent), mostly crude petroleum & natural gas (11.04 percent from 12.90 percent) and quarrying products & other mining products (7.92 percent from 10.44 percent). On a monthly basis, wholesale prices went up 0.44 percent, after a 0.2 percent gain in the prior month.

The annual inflation rate in Taiwan rose to 0.58 percent in March 2019 from 0.23 in the previous month and below market expectations of 0.65 percent. It was the highest inflation rate in five months, as prices increased further for food (1.44 percent from 0.87 percent in February); housing (0.90 percent from 0.85 percent); miscellaneous goods & services (0.66 percent from 0.44 percent); education & entertainment (0.22 percent from 0.03 percent); and health (1.05 percent from 0.73 percent). Also, cost declined at a softer pace for transportation & communication (-0.70 percent from -1.41 percent); and clothing (-0.65 percent from -1.35 percent). Annual core inflation, which excludes fruits, vegetables and energy advanced 0.47 percent, after a 0.3 percent gain in the prior month. On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 0.1 percent, easing from a 0.51 percent rise in February.

Imports rose from China & Hong Kong (16.1 percent), ASEAN (8.4 percent), Japan (11.3 percent), the US (14.1 percent) and Europe (4.5 percent).

The Nikkei Taiwan Manufacturing PMI went up to 49.0 in March 2019 from 46.3 in the prior month. The latest reading marked the sixth straight month of contraction in factory activity and the weakest in the current sequence of declines. Output, new orders and export sales all contracted at slower rates. Also, buying activity dropped at the softer pace in six months, and inventories declined slightly. Meanwhile,the job creation rate rose for the first time in four months, though only marginally. On the price front, input inflation rate increased to the fastest pace since November, driven by cost of raw materials while output prices fell for the fourth consecutive month on efforts to attract client demand. Finally, business sentiment regarding the 12-month outlook for output turned positive for the first time this year.

Retail sales in Taiwan slipped 9.06 percent year-on-year in February of 2019, following an upwardly revised 8.17 percent jump in the prior month. Sales fell mostly for autos, motorcycles and related parts and accessories (-19.84 percent vs -3.47 percent in January); information and communications equipment & electrical household appliances (-17.76 percent vs 5.41 percent); food, beverages & tobacco (-15.76 percent vs 15.34 percent); building materials (-11.16 percent vs 7.64 percent) and fabrics, clothes & clothing accessories (-7.80 percent vs 18.41 percent). On a monthly basis, retail sales slumped 18.95 percent after an upwardly revised 1.32 percent rise in January. Considering the first two months of 2019, retail trade went down 0.28 percent over a year ago.

Industrial production in Taiwan declined 1.80 percent year-on-year in February of 2019, following a downwardly revised 1.09 percent drop in the prior month. It is the steepest decrease in industrial activity since February last year. Output fell for manufacturing (-1.75 percent vs -1.08 percent in January); electricity and gas supply (-3.14 percent vs -1.29 percent) and water supply (-1.27 percent vs -1.73 percent). In contrast, production surged for mining & quarrying (9.70 percent vs 1.46 percent). On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, industrial production dropped 0.24 percent, after a downwardly revised 2.50 percent decline in January. Considering the first two months of 2019, industrial output shrank 1.41 percent over a year ago.

The central bank of Taiwan left its key policy rate unchanged at 1.375 percent on March 21st 2019, matching market expectations, saying Taiwan's economy would likely expand at a somewhat slower pace this year due to lower global growth and persistent uncertainties over the international economic, trade, and financial prospects. In addition, the actual output remains below potential and inflationary pressures are expected to be subdued. The goods surplus went down to USD 17.47 billion from USD 22.92 billion, as exports decreased by USD 6.25 billion affected by the slowdown in global growth and higher base periods while imports shrank by USD 0.80 billion. The primary income surplus also narrowed to USD 2.79 billion from USD 4.99 billion, as foreign direct investment income fell to USD 2.68 billion from USD 4.36 billion. Meanwhile, the services deficit declined to USD 0.78 billion from USD 1.51 billion, mainly due to the decrease in processing fee and the increase in transportation revenue; and the secondary income shortfall rose slightly to USD 0.83 billion from USD 0.77 billion in Q4 2017, explained by the large amount of trade liquidated damages in the same quarter last year. In 2018, the current account surplus shrank to USD 68.26 billion from USD 82.84 billion in 2017.

Taiwan GDP Annual Growth Rate at 1.78 percent  
The Taiwanese economy expanded 1.78 percent year-on-year in Q4 2018, compared to an advance estimate of 1.76 percent but below an upwardly revised 2.38 percent growth in the previous period. It is the slowest expansion since Q2 2016. Gross capital formation slowed sharply (9.42% vs 17.33% in Q3), on lower investment in machinery & equipment and private consumption was barely unchanged (1.67% vs 1.69%), as weaker sales of ICT products and a slump in financial services were offset by higher spending during local elections and referendums. Also, the contribution from net trade was more negative as exports rose only 1.29% (vs 1.35% in Q3) despite imports slowed (4.29% vs 4.68% in Q3). Conversely, government spending rebounded markedly (3.55% vs -1.47%). On a seasonally adjusted quarterly basis, the economy grew 0.37 percent, after an upwardly revised 0.47 percent in Q3. For the whole 2018, the GDP advanced 2.63%, below 3.08% in 2017. For 2019, it is projected to grow by 2.27%.
