Taiwan GDP Annual Growth Rate at 1.78 percent  
The Taiwanese economy expanded 1.78 percent year-on-year in Q4 2018, compared to an advance estimate of 1.76 percent but below an upwardly revised 2.38 percent growth in the previous period. It is the slowest expansion since Q2 2016. Gross capital formation slowed sharply (9.42% vs 17.33% in Q3), on lower investment in machinery & equipment and private consumption was barely unchanged (1.67% vs 1.69%), as weaker sales of ICT products and a slump in financial services were offset by higher spending during local elections and referendums. Also, the contribution from net trade was more negative as exports rose only 1.29% (vs 1.35% in Q3) despite imports slowed (4.29% vs 4.68% in Q3). Conversely, government spending rebounded markedly (3.55% vs -1.47%). On a seasonally adjusted quarterly basis, the economy grew 0.37 percent, after an upwardly revised 0.47 percent in Q3. For the whole 2018, the GDP advanced 2.63%, below 3.08% in 2017. For 2019, it is projected to grow by 2.27%.

On a monthly basis, wholesale prices declined 0.33 percent, after falling 1.85 percent in the prior month.

Prices rebounded for food (0.85 percent vs -0.6 percent in December), namely fruits (3.02 percent) while vegetables declined 17.79 percent); education & entertainment (0.36 percent vs -0.2 percent); and rose faster for health (0.89 percent vs 0.7 percent). On the other hand, inflation was steady for housing (0.69 percent) and slowed for miscellaneous goods & services (0.5 percent vs 1 percent). Also, prices continued to fall for transportation & communication (-1.58 percent vs -1 percent); and clothing (-1.63 percent vs -1.2 percent). Annual core inflation, which excludes fruits, vegetables and energy was nearly flat at 0.53 percent. On a monthly basis, consumer prices fell 0.14 percent.

The Nikkei Taiwan Manufacturing PMI edged down to 47.5 in January 2019 from 47.7 in the previous month, pointing to the quickest deterioration in operating conditions in the manufacturing sector since September 2015. New orders fell at a similarly sharp rate to that seen at the end of last year, with new export sales dropping at the fastest rate since August 2015, and output continued to decline. Also, firms cut back on their purchasing activity and lowered their holdings of both purchased and finished items. A lack of pressure on capacity meanwhile led to a further fall in backlogs of work, despite staffing levels falling for the second month in a row. On the price front, average input prices declined again in January, leading firms to cut their selling prices at the steepest pace for nearly three years.
