Sri Lanka GDP Annual Growth Rate at 3.70 percent  
The Sri Lanka economy advanced 3.7 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2019, up from 1.8 percent in the prior period. The growth was mainly boosted by a rebound in the industrial activities (3.0 percent vs -3.6 percent in Q4), particularly mining & quarrying (5.8 percent vs -14.9 percent); construction (6.9 percent vs -10.1 percent) and manufacture of furniture (5.7 percent vs -7.5 percent) while agriculture output advanced faster (5.5 percent vs 4.5 percent), namely animal production (9.4 percent vs 1.2 percent). On the other hand, the services output rose at a softer pace (4.1 percent vs 4.3 percent), mainly financial services activities (9.8 percent vs 12.6 percent).

Overall gains were seen in new orders (52.0 vs 37.5 in April) and production (55.0 vs 32.5), while employment continued to contract (45.0 vs 43.5) and stocks of purchases also fell (44.5 vs 41.0).

Producer prices in Sri Lanka increased 4.5 percent year-on-year in April of 2019, following an upwardly revised 4.1 percent rise in the previous month, as agriculture cost fell less (-6.6 percent vs -8.3 percent in March), mainly due to farming of animals (26.5 percent vs 16.7 percent). On the other hand, prices rose at a softer pace for manufacturing (10.5 percent vs 10.8 percent) and electricity & water supply (2.0 percent vs 3.6 percent). In contrast, increases in the number of arrivals were recorded from Germany (56.7 percent to 16,930) and France (23.4 percent to 9,148). In the first four months of the year, the number of tourist arrivals rose 2.2 percent to 907,575.

It was the highest rate since August 2018, as food and non-alcoholic beverages cost rebounded (0.8 percent vs -0.9 percent in April) while inflation was steady for non-food products (at 6.8 percent). Among non-food, cost grew faster for restaurants & hotels (10 percent vs 7.2 percent); recreation & culture (3.6 percent vs 3.2 percent); furniture & household equipment (6.4 percent vs 6.2 percent) and for alcoholic beverages & tobacco (15.5 percent vs 15 percent). On the other hand, cost slowed for housing & utilities (3.9 percent vs 4.5 percent); transport (9.3 percent vs 10.6 percent) and clothing & footwear (7.8 percent vs 9.2 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 1.6 percent, accelerating from a 0.3 percent increase in April.

Sri Lanka Interest Rate at 7.50 percent  
The Central Bank of Sri Lanka lowered its benchmark interest rate by 50 bps to 7.5 percent on May 31st 2019. This was the first rate cut in more than a year, amid anticipation of a lower 2019 GDP growth after tourism and investment plunged in the wake of Easter Sunday bombings. In 2018, the economy is struggling already, with growth easing to a 17-year low of 3.2 percent, due to prolonged political crisis and past policy tightening. Policymakers also highlighted that market lending rates had failed to show any sign of commensurate downward adjustment, despite recent liquidity injections and falls in the call money rate, government bond yields and the maximum interest rates on deposit products. In April, private sector credit growth slowed to near a 5-1/2-year low of 8.8 percent. The Standing Lending Facility Rate/SLFR was also cut by 50 bps to 8.5 percent.
