The current account deficit in Serbia widened to USD 531 million in March 2019 from USD 462 million in the same month of the previous year. It was the largest current account gap since December 2013, as the services surplus narrowed to USD 70 million from USD 93 million in March 2018. Also, the primary income shortfall rose to USD 338 million from USD 318 million and the secondary income surplus fell to USD 269 million from USD 334 million. On the other hand, the goods deficit declined to USD 532 million from USD 570 million a year earlier. Considering the first quarter of the year, the country recorded a USD 1064 million trade gap, compared to a USD 904 million shortfall in the same period of 2018.

Serbia Inflation Rate at 3.10 percent  
The annual inflation rate in Serbia rose to 3.1 percent in April of 2019 from 2.8 percent in the previous month and well above market expectations of 2.6 percent. It was the highest inflation rate since September of 2017, as prices advanced faster for all main categories: food & non-alcoholic beverages (5.5 percent from 4.9 percent in March), particularly vegetables (37.5 percent), brad and cereals (3 percent) and meat (1.6 percent); housing & utilities (1.5 percent from 1.4 percent); transport (4 percent from 3.8 percent); alcoholic beverages & tobacco (5.2 percent from 5.1 percent); health (2.6 percent from 2.4 percent); miscellaneous goods & services (1.9 percent from 1.3 percent) and furniture & household goods (0.6 percent from 0.4 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 0.7 percent, following a 0.4 percent gain and also above consensus of a 0.4 percent increase.

Serbia Interest Rate at 3.00 percent  
The National Bank of Serbia left its key policy rate unchanged at 3 percent on its May 5th 2019 meeting, as widely expected. Policymakers said that prudence in monetary policy is still needed, mainly due to uncertainty in the international environment. The Committee noted that the convergence of inflation rate to the target range in March was mostly due to cost of vegetables and their growth above the seasonally regular for this period of the year. In the forthcoming period, inflation is projected to remain stable within the target tolerance band (3.0±1.5 percent). Policymakers added that economic growth in 2019 is expected to be driven by domestic demand.

Serbia’s retail sales increased 9.5 percent year-on-year in March 2019, easing from a 10.8 percent gain in the previous month. Sales rose less for food, beverages and tobacco (4.3 percent compared to 7.2 percent in February); and non-food products (13.1 percent compared to 13.8 percent). Meanwhile, sales of automotive fuel went up further (15.2 percent compared to 14.2 percent). On a monthly basis, retail sales increased 16 percent. Considering the first quarter of 2019, retail trade advanced 8.6 percent over the same period of 2018.

Serbia’s gross domestic product grew 0.3 percent on quarter in the three months to December of 2018, following an upwardly revised 0.8 percent advance in the previous period. It was the lowest pace of expansion since the last quarter of 2017, when the economy shrank by 1 percent. On a yearly basis, GDP rose 3.4 percent, slower than an upwardly revised 4.1 percent advance in the previous period and slightly lower than preliminary estimates of 3.5 percent. It was the lowest growth rate since the last quarter of 2017.
