Russia Car Sales Slump at Start of 2023
Sales of new cars and light commercial vehicles in Russia decreased by 63.1 percent from a year earlier to 32,499 units in January 2023, the 19th consecutive month of decline. The country's auto industry has been hit hard following the imposition of Western sanctions last year due to the war in Ukraine. The AEB has said it expects car sales to recover by just 12 percent during 2023, after a slump of 58.8 percent in 2022, as the industry will probably remain under pressure and the decline in real wages will likely hit demand. Russia's car production slumped 67 percent last year to just 450,000 passenger cars, the largest fall since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Car sales in Russia sank by 50.2 percent year-on-year to 64,072 units in December of 2022, marking a 58.8 percent plummet for the whole year as sweeping sanctions from Western states heavily impacted the industry in Russia. Domestic production was significantly down during the period as high-profile European manufacturers left Russia in retaliation to the country’s invasion of Ukraine. National producers were also impacted, as sanctions halted imports of auto parts that manufacturers were heavily dependent on. In turn, prices increased sharply despite the downturn in quality.

Russian Auto Sales Plunge in May
Car sales in Russia plunged by 83.5 percent year-on-year to 24,268 units in May of 2022, the least since data started being collected in 2006 and accelerating from a 78.5 percent drop in the previous month, as sanctions and economic isolation continued to pressure the industry. Production was seen significantly lower as foreign producers left Russia after the invasion of Ukraine, while penalties from the West suspended imports of components and parts that the domestic industry heavily relies on. As of early June, only two auto factories operate in the country, compared to more than 20 before March.
