Norway Producer Prices Change at 4.90 percent  
Norway's producer prices rose by 4.9 percent year-on-year in January 2019, easing from a downwardly revised 7.7 percent increase in the previous month. It was the lowest producer inflation rate since February, as prices rose at a softer pace for extraction of oil and natural gas (2.7 percent vs 8.7 percent in December) and manufacturing (2.2 percent vs 3.7 percent). At the same time, water supply inflation was unchanged at 11.3 percent, while cost went up faster for both mining & quarrying (6.7 percent vs 5 percent) and electricity, gas & steam (48.9 percent vs 47.2 percent). On a monthly basis, producer prices went up 0.3 percent in January, following a revised 3.6 percent fall in December.

Upward pressure came from: housing & utilities (5.9 percent, the same as in December); transport (3.4 percent vs 3.5 percent); food & non-alcoholic beverages (1.2 percent vs 3.4 percent); recreation & culture (3.9 percent vs 3.2 percent); restaurants & hotels (3.3 percent vs 3.2 percent); furnishings, household equipment & routine maintenance (1.4 percent vs 3.3 percent); and miscellaneous goods & services (1.3 percent vs 1.6 percent). Annual core inflation rate, which is adjusted for tax changes and excludes energy products, was unchanged at 2.1 percent in January, also below market consensus of 2.3 percent. On a monthly basis, consumer prices fell 0.5 prices and the core index dropped 0.7 percent.

The Norwegian economy advanced 0.5 percent on quarter in the three months to December 2018, slightly below the previous period's 0.6 percent growth and market consensus of 0.6 percent. Household spending rose 0.4 percent, reversing a 0.1 percent contraction in Q3; and government spending growth was unchanged at 0.1 percent. Meanwhile, fixed investment shrank 0.8 percent (vs 1.4 percent in Q3); petroleum activities and ocean transport dropped 2.7 percent (vs 2 percent in Q3); and net external demand contributed negatively to the growth as exports slumped 1.9 percent (vs 0.7 percent in Q3) and imports declined at a softer 1 percent (vs -0.4 percent in Q3). Mainland GDP, which excludes the largely petroleum-based offshore sector, expanded 0.9 percent in the fourth quarter, much faster than a 0.4 percent growth in Q3.

Norway's general public’s domestic loan debt increased 5.4 percent year-on-year to NOK 5,723.5 billion in December 2018, easing from an upwardly revised 5.6 percent advance in the prior month. It was the smallest gain in domestic loan debt since May 2017, as non-financial corporations' debt rose at a softer 5.1 percent to NOK 1,760.9 billion (vs 5.8 percent in November) while households' domestic debt went up 5.5 percent to NOK 3,449.9 billion, the same as in November. On the other hand, municipal government's debt increased at a faster 6.3 percent to NOK 512.7 billion (vs 5.3 percent in November).

Norway's industrial confidence indicator edged up to 9 in the fourth quarter of 2018 from 8.9 in the previous period and little-changed from the second quarter's near seven-year high. Manufacturers reported an increase in total production of intermediate, capital, and consumer goods; and the overall employment rose, with producers of capital reporting strong growth, due to higher workloads and large projects among petroleum-related producers. Still, new orders from both the domestic and export market increased at a slower pace. The index for the general outlook for the first quarter of 2019 is now over 60 and is at its highest level since the fourth quarter of 2010. Industry leaders report that investment plans are slightly adjusted upwards and the growth rate for employment is expected to increase further. New orders from both the home and export market are also expected to increase further. The same is expected for the total stocks of orders.

Norway's consumer confidence declined to 14.6 in the fourth quarter of 2018 from a downwardly revised 15.2 in the previous period. It was the lowest reading since the second quarter of 2017, as consumers' expectations regarding their own financial conditions next year weakened sharply (18.8 vs 23.1 in Q3) and their willingness to make large purchases softened (10.4 vs 11.4). Meantime, households' expectations towards the country's economy last year improved (18.2 vs 16.3), as well as those towards the country's economy over the next 12 months (2.9 vs 1.3). "Fear of higher interest rates and increased turmoil in the world economy can explain something of the case, " the CEO of Finance Norway Idar Kreutzer said. "The development may indicate that households have become more uncertain", he added. The country's consumer confidence hit a 24-year low of -15.2 in the first quarter of 2016, due to a plunge in crude oil prices.
