Norway's trade surplus narrowed sharply to NOK 13.9 billion in March 2019 from NOK 17.9 billion in the same month of the previous year. It was the smallest trade surplus since November 2017, when the trade balance posted a deficit of NOK 6.1 billion. Exports fell 3.2 percent to NOK 79.7 billion, mainly dragged by mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials (-11.3 percent) and manufactured goods (-1.9 percent). By contrast, exports of machinery and transport equipment jumped 29.7 percent while those of food and live animals increased 3.5 percent. Meanwhile, imports rose 2.2 percent to NOK 65.8 billion, boosted by purchases of miscellaneous manufactures articles (17.6 percent); food and live animals (8.6 percent); chemicals and related products, n.e.s (13 percent); and machinery and transport equipment (16.9 percent). Considering the first quarter of the year, the trade surplus narrowed 21.5 percent year-on-year to NOK 57.5 billion.

Norway's annual inflation rate eased to a nine-month low of 2.9 percent in March 2019 from 3.0 percent in the previous month, but slightly above market consensus of 2.8 percent. Prices rose at a softer pace for: housing & utilities (2.7 percent vs 4.1 percent in February) and recreation & culture (3.2 percent vs 4.3 percent). On the other hand, inflation was steady for miscellaneous goods & services (at 1.4 percent), while accelerated for food & non-alcoholic beverages (2.9 percent vs 2.0 percent); transport (3.5 percent vs 2.7 percent); restaurants & hotels (4.2 percent vs 3.1 percent); and furnishings, household equipment & routine maintenance (3.2 percent vs 1.8 percent). The core inflation rate, which is adjusted for tax changes and excludes energy products, increased to 2.7 percent in March from 2.6 percent in the prior month, beating consensus of 2.5 percent. On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose 0.2 prices and the core index increased 0.3 percent.

The central bank of Norway raised its key policy rate by 25bps to 1 percent on March 21st 2019, in line with market expectations. It is the first rate hike so far this year. Policymakers said the Norwegian economy is expanding at a solid pace, capacity utilisation appears to be slightly above a normal level and underlying inflation is a little higher than the inflation target although there are prospects for weaker growth and lower interest rates abroad. "It may seem that we are experiencing an increased polarization in Norwegian society, where the belief in the future is linked to how people seem to vote", the CEO of Finance Norway Idar Kreutzer said. The country's consumer confidence hit a 24-year low of -15.2 in the first quarter of 2016, due to a plunge in crude oil prices.

The Norwegian economy advanced 0.5 percent on quarter in the three months to December 2018, slightly below the previous period's 0.6 percent growth and market consensus of 0.6 percent. Household spending rose 0.4 percent, reversing a 0.1 percent contraction in Q3; and government spending growth was unchanged at 0.1 percent. Meanwhile, fixed investment shrank 0.8 percent (vs 1.4 percent in Q3); petroleum activities and ocean transport dropped 2.7 percent (vs 2 percent in Q3); and net external demand contributed negatively to the growth as exports slumped 1.9 percent (vs 0.7 percent in Q3) and imports declined at a softer 1 percent (vs -0.4 percent in Q3). Mainland GDP, which excludes the largely petroleum-based offshore sector, expanded 0.9 percent in the fourth quarter, much faster than a 0.4 percent growth in Q3.

Industry leaders report that investment plans are slightly adjusted upwards and the growth rate for employment is expected to increase further. New orders from both the home and export market are also expected to increase further. The same is expected for the total stocks of orders.
