The economy of Morocco advanced 2.8% from a year earlier in the first quarter of 2019, following a 2.9% expansion in the previous period. Output rose at slower pace for wholesale & retail trade (3.8% vs 4.5% in Q4); finance & insurance (2.5% vs 3.9%); post and telecommunications (2.3% vs 2.7%) and manufacturing (2.5% vs 3.9%). In addition, agricultural activity declined (-3.2% vs 3.5%), mainly weighed down by drought conditions. In contrast, faster growth was seen for business and personal services (4.5% vs 3%); utilities (23.5% vs 7%); transport (2.9% vs 1.7%); mining (5.6% vs 0.3%) and construction (1.5% vs 0.4%). Also, output rebounded sharply for fishing (18.4% vs -13.5%).

In addition, production fell for metal products (-13.1% vs 2.9%); machinery and electrical appliances (-2.3% vs 15.5%); tobacco (-0.7% vs 4%); other transport equipment (-3.8% vs 8.9%); leather, shoes and travel articles (-1.4% vs -27.4%); wood products (-1.5% vs -4.3%) and printing products (-1% vs 12.3%). Conversely, main gains were posted by apparel (10.4% vs 7.8%) and metallic products (12.1% vs -10.1%).

Morocco Interest Rate at 2.25 percent  
The National Bank of Morocco held its monetary policy rate unchanged at 2.25% at its June 18th 2019 meeting. The bank noted that inflation was low during the first four months of the year; and it is expected to ease to 0.6% in 2019 from 1.9% in 2018, before rising to 1.2% in 2020, amid greater domestic demand. Linked to this, the government announced in late April a general increase in the minimum wages, with salaries in the private sector rising 10% over two years, with a 5% hike taking effect in July 2019 and a further 5% increase in July 2020. The economy is projected to slow to 2.8% in 2019 from 3% a year earlier, mainly due to lower agricultural output; but to speed up to 4% in 2020, as agriculture activity must rebound sharply, growing 6%.

Meantime, the unemployment rate remained high among youth aged 15-24 (24.1% vs 25.7%), the 25-34 age group (15.9% vs 16.7%) and college graduates (17.1% vs 18.3%).
