Mauritius Jobless Rate Falls to 6.6% in Q2
The unemployment rate in Mauritius declined to 6.6% in the second quarter of 2019 from 7.0% in the same quarter of the previous year. The number of unemployed persons decreased by 1,400 to 39,100 while employment rose by 12,300 to 553,800. Also, labour force went up by 10,900 to 592,900. The unemployment rate decreased for men (3.8% vs 5.3% in Q2 2018) while it rose considerably for women (10.8% vs 9.5%). Meantime, the youth unemployment rate fell to 21.3% from 27.5% a year ago. Around 11% or 4.3 thousand had not reached the Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) level or equivalent and a further 36% or 14.1 thousand did not have the Cambridge School Certificate (SC) or equivalent. Also, 4.4 thousand or 11% of the unemployed were heads of households and 6.2 thousand or 16% lived in households with no employed persons. In the previous quarter, the jobless rate was higher at 6.9%.
