The unemployment rate in Macedonia decreased to 17.8 percent in the first quarter of 2019 from 21.6 percent in the same period of the previous year. It was the lowest jobless rate since series began in 2004. The number of unemployed persons fell by 35.4 thousand to 171.3 thousand and the number of employed rose by 39.5 thousand to 789.4 thousand. Meanwhile, the labour force participation rate went up to 57.1 percent from 56.9 percent a year earlier and employment rate increased to 46.9 percent from 44.6 percent. In the last quarter of 2018, the unemployment rate was higher at 19.4 percent.
