Macau Interest Rate at 2.50 percent  
The Macau Monetary Authority (AMCM) lowered its key interest rate by 25 basis point to 2.5 percent at its August meeting, following the Hong Kong Monetary Authority's move to match the US Federal Reserve rate cut. This was the first adjustment in interest rate in eight months and the first cut since November 2008. As the pataca is linked to the Hong Kong dollar, the movements of policy rates in Hong Kong and Macao should be basically consistent in order to maintain the effective operation of the linked exchange rate system. The Hong Kong dollar is linked to the US dollar under a similar linked exchange rate system.

Macau's trade deficit narrowed to MOP 5.75 billion in June 2019 from MOP 6.12 billion a year earlier. This was the smallest trade gap since February. Year-on-year, exports tumbled 14.3 percent to MOP 0.91 billion. Outbound shipments shrank to China (-34.8 pct), and the EU (-47.2 pct) but rose to the US (0.4 pct). Meanwhile, imports fell at a softer 7.3 percent to MOP 6.66 billion Purchases dropped from China (-12.1 pct), but increased from the US (33.3 pct), the EU (4.0 pct). Considering the first half of the year, exports grew 3.3 percent from a year earlier to MOP 6.40 billion, while imports dropped 1.7 percent to MOP 42.42 billion, bringing a trade gap of MOP 36.02 billion.

Macau Unemployment Rate at 1.70 percent  
The unemployment rate in Macau stood at 1.7 percent in April-June 2019, the same as in the previous period and staying at its lowest level since February-April 2015 period. Total number of unemployed decreased by 300 (-4.0 percent) to 6.6 thousand while employment was unchanged at 387.2 thousand. Job gains were seen in gaming & junket activities; while losses were reported in wholesale & retail trade; hotels & similar activities; construction, and restaurant & similar activities. The labor force participation rate stood at 70.4 in April-June, the same as in the prior period. In April-June 2018, the jobless rate was slightly higher at 1.8 percent.

Visitor arrivals in Macau surged by 18.9 percent year-on-year to 3.10 million in June 2019, following a 25.6 percent advance in the previous month. Same-day visitors jumped 35.4 percent and overnight visitors grew 5.7 percent. Visitors from China, which accounted for 67.9 percent of total visitors, rose 19.9 percent, with those traveling under the Individual Visit Scheme increasing 14.9 percent. Also, visitors went up from South Korea (5.1 percent), Hong Kong (24.3 percent), and Taiwan (1.3 percent). Considering the first half of the year, visitor arrivals rose 20.6 percent year-on-year to 20.28 million.

The annual inflation rate in Macau declined to 2.62 percent in June 2019, the lowest since January 2018, from 2.69 percent in the previous month, as prices rose at softer pace for: transport (4.76 percent vs 4.88 percent); household goods & furnishings (2.39 percent vs 2.52 percent); recreation & culture (1.21 percent vs 1.93 percent); and health (2.09 percent vs 2.29 percent). In addition, prices fell for clothing & footwear (-1.40 percent vs 0.80 percent) and communication (-0.72 percent vs -0.79 percent). Meanwhile, inflation was steady for both housing & utilities (at 2.29 percent) and education (at 5.90 percent), while it accelerated for food & non-alcoholic beverages (3.35 percent vs 3.01 percent) and miscellaneous goods & services (2.23 percent vs 1.83 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose 0.29 percent in June, after a 0.28 percent gain in May.

Macau GDP Annual Growth Rate at -3.20 percent  
The economy of Macau shrank 3.2 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2019, following a 2.1 percent expansion in the previous quarter. That was the first economic contraction since the second quarter of 2016, mainly due to a decline in exports of services (-0.3 percent vs 5.2 percent in Q4), in particular gaming services (-0.6 percent) and other tourism services (-0.3 percent), as well as a steep fall in fixed investment (-31.7 percent vs -14.3 percent) due to a 37.5 percent drop in construction investment. In addition, the completion of the Macau boundary crossing area of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge led to a 82.3 percent plunge in public construction investment. On the other hand, private consumption growth slowed (2.1 percent vs 2.8 percent) while government spending continued to increase at a solid pace (4.1 percent vs 3.4 percent).

It was the first decline in retail sales since the third quarter 2016, when sales fell by 2.7 percent. Sales decreased for: communication (-14.0 percent vs 13.1 percent in Q4); goods in pharmacies (-10.0 percent vs 10.0 percent); automotive fuels (-3.3 percent vs 6.3 percent); watches, clothes & jewelry (-2.1 percent vs 1.6 percent) while those fell faster for both motor vehicles (-22.9 percent vs -5.4 percent) and adult's clothing (-13.6 percent vs -6.3 percent). In addition, sales rose softer for: cosmetics & sanitary articles (2.4 percent vs 14.9 percent); goods in department stores (6.0 percent vs 7.5 percent).On the other hand, sales went up faster for: leather goods (7.7 percent vs 4.3 percent); goods in supermarkets (6.0 percent vs 3.9 percent).
