Latvia Q1 Jobless Rate at Near 2-Year High of 7.4%
The unemployment rate in Latvia jumped to 7.4 percent in the first quarter of 2020 from 6 percent in the previous period. It was the highest jobless rate since the second quarter of 2018, amid business closures and lockdowns due to the coronavirus pandemic. The number of unemployed rose by 14.3 thousand to 72.2 thousand while the number of employed dropped by 11 thousand to 902.1 thousand. Unemployment rate among young people aged 15-24 years increased to 13.5 percent from 10.1 percent in the prior period. A year earlier, the jobless rate was lower at 6.9 percent.

Latvia Jobless Rate Holds Steady at 12-Year Low
The unemployment rate in Latvia stood at 6.0 percent in the three months to December 2019, the lowest level since the fourth quarter of 2007. The number of unemployed persons declined by 1 thousand to 57.9 thousand while the number of employed decreased by 4.7 thousand to 913.1 thousand. Unemployment rate among young people aged 15-24 years went down to 10.1 percent from 11.3 percent in the previous period. A year earlier, the jobless rate was slightly higher at 6.9 percent.

Latvia Jobless Rate Lowest since 2017
The unemployment rate in Latvia dropped further to 6 percent in the third quarter of 2019 from 6.4 percent in the previous period. That was the lowest rate since the last quarter of 2017, as the number of unemployed decreased by 2.6 thousand from the previous quarter to 58.9 thousand while the number of employed rose by 12.4 thousand to 917.8 thousand. Unemployment rate among young people aged 15-24 years also went down to 11.3 percent from 15.1 percent in the previous period. A year earlier, the jobless rate was slightly higher at 7 percent.
