Jamaica Inflation Rate at 4.80 percent  
The annual inflation in Jamaica rose to 4.8 percent in May 2019 from 4 percent in the previous month. It was the highest inflation rate since January last year, as prices increased further for food & non-alcoholic beverages (6.5 percent from 5.8 percent in April); housing & utilities (6.7 percent from 3.1 percent); transport (1.7 percent from 1.2 percent); miscellaneous goods & services (2.3 percent from 2.2 percent); restaurants & hotels (1.7 percent from 1.6 percent); and clothing & footwear (2.4 percent from 2.3 percent). Meanwhile, cost eased for recreation & culture (1.3 percent from 1.7 percent) and health (1.2 percent from 1.6 percent) and inflation was steady for furnishings & household equipment (at 4.7 percent, the same as in April); and education (at 4.2 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 0.8 percent, after a 0.1 percent gain in the prior month.

Jamaica Interest Rate at 0.75 percent  
The central bank of Jamaica lowered its key policy interest rate by 50 bps to 0.75 percent at its May meeting, after trimming it by 25 bps in the previous meeting. It is the third rate cut so far this year bringing borrowing cost to a record low. Policymakers said that the decision is consistent with the inflation target range (4 percent – 6 percent) and stimulates the private sector credit which should led to a stronger economic activity. The Committee noted that the risks to the inflation outlook are assessed to be balanced. Policymakers added that the inflation rate is expected to increase towards the mid-point of the target by the March 2020 quarter and will decline towards the bottom of the target in the period after the March 2020 quarter. The Bank also narrowed the width of the interest rate corridor from 300 bps to 200 bps.
