Electricity prices in Italy were near €200 per megawatt hour, rebounding from the 11-week low of €150 touched on January 18th as the country's brief cold front pushed demand for natural gas, Italy's main electricity feedstock. Still, costs remain well below the record-high of €655 touched in early September, as Europe's mild winter improved LNG availability, and the securement of long-term contracts for alternative sources saved Europe's dire situation from the Russian supply shock. Following natural gas supply halts from Moscow, Italy's government and energy giant ENI jointly pledged to increase energy investments in Algeria, aiming to expand on the current TransMed pipeline and become an energy import hub for Europe. Meanwhile, Italy's new government raised the budget deficit for next year to 4.5% of GDP to allocate more than €21 billion in tax breaks and bonuses to support businesses and households in times of the energy crisis.
