The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in Iceland rose to 4.7 percent in May 2019 from an upwardly revised 3.2 percent in the previous month. It was the highest jobless rate since October 2014, as the number of unemployed people increased by 3,300 to 10,000 while employment fell by 2,400 to 200,000. The activity rate went down to 81.1 percent from 82.4 in April while the employment rate decreased to 77.2 percent from 79.8 percent. A year ago, the unemployment rate was lower at 1.6 percent.

Producer prices in Iceland rose 7.8 percent year-on-year in May of 2019, easing from a 10.2 percent gain in the previous month. It was the lowest producer inflation since February, as power intensive industry cost fell (-1.0 percent vs 10 percent in April). On the other hand, prices advanced faster for marine products (18.5 percent vs 16.2 percent); food production (5.2 percent vs 4.1 percent) and other manufacturing industries (12.7 percent vs 9.1 percent). On a monthly basis, producer prices went up 1.3 percent, following a 0.5 percent increase in April.

The Central Bank of Iceland lowered its seven-day term deposit rate by 25bps to an all-time low of 3.75% on June 26th 2019, following a 50bps cut in the previous month, saying inflation expectations have fallen. In June, inflation rate dropped to 3.3 percent from a five-month high of 3.6 percent in May, and in line with the Central Bank’s forecast. Policymakers kept the economic outlook from the previous MPC meeting, at which GDP was projected to shrink by 0.4 percent in 2019 and inflation to return to the target of 2 percent by mid-2020 but the contraction in tourism is expected to be deeper than previously expected.

On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 0.4 percent, following a 0.2 percent rise in May.

Iceland GDP Annual Growth Rate at 1.70 percent  
The economy of Iceland expanded 1.7 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2019, easing from a 4.0 percent expansion in the previous period. It is the lowest growth rate since the first quarter of 2014 when the economy contracted 1 percent. Household spending slowdown (2.8 percent compared to 3.3 percent in Q4) while both gross fixed capital formation (-9.4 percent vs 2.5 percent) and inventories (-2.9 percent vs 0.9 percent) fell. Meanwhile, public expenditure increased faster (2.8 percent vs 2.6 percent). Regarding net foreign trade, exports went up 2.6 percent (from -5.9 percent in Q4) while imports dropped 8.1 percent (from 6.0 percent in Q4). On a quarterly basis, the economy advanced 0.6 percent, after a 1.7 percent expansion in the previous quarter.
