Estonian producer prices increased by 1.6 percent year-on-year in December 2018, unchanged from the previous month, remaining the lowest producer inflation since January 2017. Prices rose faster for electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply (39.7 percent vs 35.1 percent in November) while cost slowed for water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation (0.3 percent vs 0.5 percent). Meanwhile, prices fell faster for manufacturing (-1.0 percent vs -0.8 percent), as cost dropped for electronic equipment while it increased for wood and food products; and mining and quarrying (-2.6 percent vs -2.4 percent). On a monthly basis, producer prices decreased 0.6 percent, following a 0.9 percent fall in November.

It was the biggest gain in industrial activity since June 2017, as production expanded at a faster pace for both manufacturing (8.1 percent vs 2.3 percent in October) and electricity, steam and hot water supply (11.9 percent vs 4.1 percent). In addition, mining output fell less than in a month earlier (-3.7 percent vs -9 percent). On a monthly basis, industrial production went up by 4.6 percent, compared to a 0.8 percent rise in October.

Estonian retail trade increased 5 percent year-on-year in November 2018, accelerating from a 3 percent rise in the prior month. It is the highest annual gain in retail sales since June, when sales fell by 2 percent. Sales rose faster for: household goods and appliances, hardware and building materials (11 pct vs 9 pct in October) while sales of textiles, clothing, footwear and leather goods rebounded (4 pct vs -8 pct). In addition, sales fell less than in a month earlier for both food, beverages and tobacco (-9 pct vs -16 pct) and automotive fuel (-3 pct vs -8 pct). Meantime, sales went up softer for: pharmaceutical and medical goods, cosmetics (11 pct vs 14 pct); other specialized stores (15 vs 20 pct), and retail sales via mail order houses or via internet (8 vs 9 pct) while sales of second-hand goods were flat (vs 5 pct in October). On a monthly basis, retail sales fell by 1 percent, after a 4 percent rise in October.

The Estonian economy advanced 4.2 percent year-on-year in the third quarter of 2018, following an upwardly revised 3.8 percent growth in the previous period. It was the highest annual growth rate since the last quarter 2017, amid a strong rebound in fixed investment (4.2 pct vs -0.6 pct in Q2). Meanwhile, private consumption rose at a softer pace (4.1 pct vs 5.2 pct) and government spending contracted further (-0.8 pct vs -0.5 pct). Also, net exports contributed negatively to the GDP growth, as imports increased by 6.1 percent (vs 8 percent in Q2), while exports grew much softer at 0.8 percent (vs 6.5 percent). On the production side, the main contributors to economic growth were construction; manufacturing; professional, scientific & technical activities; information & communication; and transportation & storage. On a seasonally adjusted quarterly basis, the GDP rose by 0.4 percent in the September quarter, slowing from a 1.4 percent expansion in the second quarter.
