Turkish Jobless Rate at 10.1% in August

Unemployment rate in Turkey increased to 10.1 percent in August of 2015 from to 9.8 percent in July but remained the same compared to the same period a year earlier. It was the highest unemployment rate since March as unemployment grew 3.9 percent year-on-year while employment increased at a slower 3.2 percent.

The number of unemployed persons went up by 114 thousand to 3.058 millin from 2.944 million in August 2014. In the same period, non-agricultural unemployment rate increased slightly by 0.1 p.p. to 12.4 percent while youth unemployment rate fell by 0.6 p.p. to 18.3 percent.

There were 27.150 million employed persons, up 837 thousand from 26.313 million persons in the previous year, boosting the employment rate to 46.8 percent from 46.1 percent. Of those who were employed, 22.2 percent was employed in agriculture (+0.1 p.p. compared to August 2014), 19.3 percent was employed in industry (-0.7 p.p. compared to August 2014), 7.5 percent was employed in construction (unchanged from August 2014) and 51 percent was employed in services (+0.6 p.p. compared to August 2014).

The labor force participation rate increased to 52.1 percent, 0.9 p.p. higher than same period last year. The activity rate for males increased by 0.5 p.p. to 72.6 percent, while for females it grew by 1.2 p.p. to 32.1 percent.
