Brazil’s Unemployment Rate Up to 5.4% in September

In September of 2013, Brazilian jobless rate increased to 5.4 percent, after declining in the previous two months.

In September, both the number of employed and unemployed people remained stable at 1.3 million and 23.2 million, respectively. The number of workers with a formal contract in the private sector (11.8 million) slightly increased from August and went up by 3.5 percent over a year earlier. 

Average real wages (R$ 1908.0) increased 1.0 percent month-over-month and 2.2 percent from September of 2012. 

Regionally, Belo Horizonte and São Paulo showed higher jobless rates (4.5 percent and 5.8 percent, respectively, from 4.3 and 5.4 percent respectively in the previous month), while unemployment remained stable in the remaining regions.
