Spain’s Unemployment Rate Continues to Fall in Q3


In the third quarter of 2013, Spanish jobless rate dropped for the second consecutive quarter to 25.98 percent, from 26.3 in the previous period, but it is up on an annual basis, from 25.02 percent in the third quarter of 2012.

The number of unemployed in Spain stood at 5.9 million persons, from 5.98 million a quarter earlier. The third quarter of 2013 registered the sharpest quarterly decline of the last 5 years.

Unemployment among males fell to 25.5 percent, from 25.6 percent in the second quarter of 2013, and female unemployment dropped to 26.6 percent, down from 27.1 percent in the previous period.

The employment rose in Services (+123.9 thousand persons), but reported a drop in Agriculture (-55 thousand), in Industry (-19.7 thousand), and in Construction (-9.7 thousand). Total active population fell to 22.73 million persons, down from 22.76 million persons in the previous quarter, leaving the rate of activity in 59.59 percent.
