Japanese Unemployment Rises to 4.1% in August


In August, Japan's jobless rate increased 0.3 percentage points to 4.1 percent, the highest level since May. The number of unemployed persons was 2.71 million, a decrease of 60 thousand or 2.2 percent from the previous year. Youth unemployment was 6.9 percent.

The number of employed persons in August of 2013 was 63.10 million, an increase of 290 thousand or 0.5 percent from the previous year. The jobs-to-applicants ratio rose to 0.95, the highest level in 5 years.

Compared to the same month a year earlier, employment rose the most in information and communication (7.3 percent), government (7.2 percent) and medical and health care (+3.7 percent). The biggest job losses were reported in agriculture (-6.8 percent), scientific research and education (-2.8 percent).
