Italian Unemployment Rate Falls to 2-1/2-Year Low


Jobless rate in Italy decreased slightly to 11.9 percent in August of 2015, from 12 percent in the previous month and matching market expectations. It was the lowest value since February of 2013, as unemployment decreased by 0.4 percent while employment went up by 0.3 percent.

In August, the number of unemployed persons declined by 11 thousand to 3.061 million from 3.072 million in July. While the number of employed persons rose by 69 thousand to 22.566 million from 22.497 million in the previous month. Employment rate was 56.5 percent (+0.2 p.p. compared to July) and inactivity rate was 35.6 percent (-0.2 p.p.). 

Youth unemployment rate (aged 15-24) increased by 0.3 p.p. to 40.7 percent, from 40.4 percent in July.

Year-on-year, the unemployment rate fell by 0.7 p.p. while the employment rate increased by 0.9 p.p. Youth unemployment rate went down by 2.3 p.p.
