German Unemployment Rate Stable at 4.9%


German seasonally adjusted jobless rate remained steady at 4.9 percent in August of 2014, provisional figures from the Federal Statistics Office showed. Employment rose 0.1 percent and the number of unemployed persons fell 0.5 percent.

In August 2014, roughly 42.7 million persons resident in Germany were in employment according to provisional calculations. Compared with August 2013, this was an increase of 358,000 persons (+0.8 percent). 

Results of the labor force survey showed that 2.15 million people were unemployed in August 2014. Compared with August 2013, their number declined by 20,000, or 0.9 percent. Adjusted for seasonal and irregular effects, the number of unemployed stood at 2.10 million (-0.5 percent over July). 

The number of persons in employment increased by 91,000, or 0.2 percent, in August 2014 on July 2014. On average over the past five years, however, the month-on-month increase in the number of persons in employment in an August had been slightly higher (104,000). After seasonal adjustment, the number of persons in employment increased by 25,000, or 0.1 percent, in August 2014 compared with the previous month.
