Turkey Unemployment Rate Edges Up to 9.6%

Turkish jobless rate increased to 9.6 percent in June of 2015, compared to 9.1 percent a year earlier, as unemployment grew 8.5 percent while employment increased at a slower 2.5 percent.

The number of unemployed persons went up by 226 thousand to 2.880 million in June from 2.654 million a year earlier. In the same period, non-agricultural unemployment rate increased slightly by 0.6 p.p. to 11.7 percent and youth unemployment rate rose by 1 p.p. to 17.7 percent.

There were 27.261 million employed persons, up 675 thousand from 26.586 million persons in the previous year, boosting the employment rate to 47.1 percent. Of those who were employed, 22 percent was employed in agriculture (-0.3 p.p. compared to June 2014), 19.7 percent was employed in industry (-0.4 p.p. compared to June 2014), 7.3 percent was employed in construction (-0.1 p.p. compared to June 2014) and 51 percent was employed in services (+0.8 p.p. compared to June 2014).

The labor force participation rate increased to 52.1 percent, 0.8 p.p. higher than June 2014. The activity rate for males increased by 0.1 p.p. to 72.4 percent, while for females it grew by 1.4 p.p. to 32.3 percent.
