India WPI Inflation Down to 5-Year Low


Indian wholesale price index rose 3.74 percent year-on-year in August of 2014, slowing from a 5.19 percent increase in July. It is the lowest rate since October of 2009 mainly due to a fall in prices of vegetables and oil.

Year-on-year, food prices rose 5.15 percent in August, down from an 8.43 percent increase in July. Among food prices the biggest increases were reported for cost of: potatoes (+61.61 percent), fruits (+20.31 percent) and milk (+12.18 percent). In contrast, vegetable cost fell 4.88 percent, prices of egg, meat and fish dropped 5.87 percent and onion cost decreased 44.7 percent. 

In August, cost of manufactured products grew by 3.45 percent. Petrol prices dropped 0.15 percent while cost of diesel eased to 11.61 percent.

On a monthly basis, wholesale prices increased 0.6 percent, following a 1.1 percent increase in July.
