Tanzania Inflation Rate Eases to 6.7% in August

In August of 2013, Tanzanian inflation rate eased to 6.7 percent, the lowest rate since January of 2011, mainly due to lower food prices.

The heavily-weighted food and non-alcoholic beverages index eased to 6.5 percent year-on-year, from 8 percent in the previous month. 

Year-on-year, cost of restaurants and hotels eased to 4.9 percent, from 5.9 percent in July. Prices for housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuel slightly decreased to 14.3 percent, from 14.4 percent in July. While transport cost accelerated to 9 percent from 7.5 percent in the previous month, cost of clothing and health remained unchanged at 5.2 percent and 2.4 percent, respectively. 

Annual inflation rate which excludes food and energy for the month of August has decreased to 6.2 percent from 6.7 percent recorded in July.

Annual inflation rate for energy has increased to 15.2 percent in August, from 12.9 percent in the previous month.

The monthly headline inflation rate for August decreased by 0.1 percent compared to a 0.01 percent increase recorded in July.
