The number of unemployed persons decreased to 2.789 million in May from 2.821 million in April.
Non-farm unemployment was 11.4 percent, down from 11.6 percent in the previous month and youth unemployment remained steady at 17 percent.
There were 27.072 million employed persons, 434 thousand more than in April, bringing the employment rate up to 46.9 percent. Yet, agriculture lost 46 thousand jobs while the non-farm sector gained 580 thousand.
The labor force participation rate increased by 0.3 percent to 51 percent in May.
