Italian Unemployment Rate Rises in May


Italian seasonally adjusted jobless rate increased to 12.6 percent in May of 2014 from a revised 12.5 percent in the previous month, and from 12.2 percent a year earlier.

The number of unemployed was recorded at 3,222 thousand persons in May of 2014, an increase of 0.8 percent compared to the previous month (26 thousand) and 4.1 percent compared to May of 2013 (+127 thousand). 

The employment rate was 55.5 percent, an increase of 0.1 percentage points from April but lower by 0.1 percentage points compared to a year earlier. 

The number of employed amounted to 22,360 thousand persons, an increase of 0.2 percent compared to the previous month (52 thousand), but lower by 0.3 percent compared to May of 2013 (-61 thousand).

Youth unemployment rate fell to 43.0 percent from 43.3 percent in April.
