Turkey Jobless Rate at Near 2-Year Low

The unemployment rate in Turkey fell to 10.1 percent in March of 2018 from 11.7 percent a year earlier, reaching the lowest rate since May of 2016. The non-agricultural jobless rate also decreased to 11.9 percent from 13.7 percent. Among youth, the rate dropped to 17.7 percent from 21.4 percent.

The number of unemployed went down to 3.210 million from 3.642 million; employment rose to 28.499 million from 27.489 million; and those detached from the labour force went up to 28.755 million from 28.504 million. The participation rate increased to 52.4 percent from 52.2 percent and the employment rate to 47.1 percent from 46.1 percent. 

The non-farm sector added 1.380 million jobs, namely in industry and services while the farm sector lost 27 thousand jobs. 7.3 percent of employed persons worked in construction, 17.7 percent in agriculture, 19.7 percent in industry and 55.3 percent in services.

On a seasonally adjusted basis, the unemployment rate was 9.9 percent, slightly higher than 9.9 percent in February.
