Irish Unemployment Rate Unchanged at 13.7% in May


In May, the standardised unemployment rate was 13.7 percent, unchanged from the revised April 2013 rate. The percentage of persons aged under 25 on the Live Register now stands at 16.0 percent, down from 16.8 percent in May 2012 and 18.4 percent in May 2011.

In the year to May 2013 the number of persons aged 25 and over on the Live Register decreased by 5,833 (-1.6 percent), and the number of persons aged under 25 decreased by 5,337 (-7.3 percent). Annual decreases in persons aged under 25 have occurred in all months since July 2010. On a seasonally adjusted basis the Live Register total recorded a monthly decrease of 700 in May 2013, bringing the seasonally adjusted total to 426,100. 

There were 87,943 casual and part-time workers on the Live Register in May 2013, which represents 20.9 percent of the total Live Register. This compares with 20.3 percent one year earlier when there were 88,064 casual and part-time workers on the Live Register. In May 54.5 percent (229,740) of all claimants on the Live Register were short term claimants.

The number of long term claimants on the Live Register in May 2013 was 191,997. The number of male long term claimants decreased by 1,176 (-0.9 percent) in the year to May 2013, while females increased by 4,444 (+8.3 percent) giving an overall annual increase of 3,268 (+1.7 percent) in the number of long term claimants.
