German Jobless Rate Steady at 35-Year Low


German seasonally adjusted harmonised jobless rate was recorded at 4.2 percent in April of 2016, unchanged from the March rate and down from 4.7 percent a year earlier. It remained at its lowest level in 35 years, as the number of unemployed declined by 0.6 percent from the previous month while persons in employment rose slightly by 0.1 percent.

Compared with the previous month, the number of unemployed persons decreased by 0.6 percent to 1.78 million from 1.79 million in March, while employment rose by 0.1 percent to 40.70 million people from 40.66 million.

Compared with April of 2015, unemployment dropped 10.1 percent from 1.98 million people while employment rose 1.9 percent from 39.93 million people. 

Youth unemployment rate was recorded at 7 percent, unchanged from the previous month and down from 7.1 percent a year earlier.

Separate data from the Labour Office showed the number of unemployed persons fell to 2.664 million in May of 2016 from 2.744 in April. The unemployment rate fell to a fresh record low of 6.1 percent.
