Hong Kong Unemployment Rate Steady at 3.1%


Hong Kong seasonally adjusted jobless rate was unchanged at 3.1 percent in February to April of 2014, remaining at a 16-year low for the fourth consecutive month.

The number of unemployed persons (not seasonally adjusted) increased by around 2,300 to 121,400 in February - April of 2014 from 119,100 in January – March of 2014. A rise in unemployment was mainly observed in the decoration, repair and maintenance for buildings, and accommodation services sectors. In contrast, unemployment decreased in the cleaning and similar activities sector, and the foundation and superstructure works of the construction sector.

The underemployment rate increased to 1.4 percent in February - April 2014 from 1.2 percent in January - March 2014, and the number of underemployed persons rose by around 5,100 from 47,700 to 52,800.

Total employment increased by around 3,800 to 3,724,800 in February - April 2014 from 3,721 000 in January - March of 2014. Over the same period, the labor force also increased by around 6,100 from to 3,846,200.
