US Budget Surplus Biggest in 7-Years


The U.S. budget surplus was $157 billion at the end of April, up 46.7 percent from a $107 billion surplus a year earlier as tax receipts surged.

Receipts for April were at $472 billion, up 14 percent from a year ago. US normally reports a surplus in April due to tax-filing season, but this year’s surplus was $50 billion more than last year’s and the fifth-largest monthly surplus on record. Outlays totaled $315 billion, up 3 percent. 

The fiscal year-to-date deficit at the end of April was $283 billion, down 8 percent from the same period of 2014 and a from a $439.5 billion gap in the first three months of 2015.
