On a seasonally adjusted basis, the Live Register total recorded a monthly decrease of 3,400 in April 2014, reducing the seasonally adjusted total to 392,700. In unadjusted terms there were 388,559 people signing on the Live Register. This represents an annual decrease of 29,034 (-7.0 percent).
The number of long term claimants was 178,225. In April 2014, 54.1 percent (210,334) of all claimants on the Live Register were short term claimants. The comparable figure for April 2013 was 55.4 percent (231,530).
There were 78,365 casual and part-time workers on the Live Register in April, which represents 20.2 percent of the total Live Register. This compares with 21.3 percent one year earlier when there were 88,909 casual and part-time workers. In the year to April, the number of casual and part-time workers decreased by 10,544 (-11.9 percent).
