German Unemployment Stable at 5.1%


German jobless rate was recorded at 5.1 percent in March of 2014, unchanged from February, provisional figures released by the Federal Statistics Office showed. A year earlier, unemployment was recorded at 5.4 percent.

There were 2.32 million unemployed in March of 2014, representing a decrease of 53,000, or 2.1 percent over March 2013. Compared with February, the number of unemployed decreased by 28,000 people or 1.3 percent.

In March 2014, roughly 41.8 million persons resident in Germany were in employment. This was an increase of 376,000, or 0.9 percent, from March 2013. Compared with the previous year, there was a slight increase in the growth rate, after +0.7 percent in December 2013 and +0.8 percent each in January and February 2014. 

According to provisional results, the number of persons in employment increased by 99,000, or 0.2 percent, from February 2014 to March 2014 because of the start of the spring upturn. After seasonal adjustment, the number of persons in employment increased by 37,000, or 0.1 percent, in March 2014 compared with the previous month.
