Spanish GDP Growth Meets Expectations in Q1

Spain’s economy advanced 0.4 percent quarter-on-quarter in the first three months of 2014, meeting market expectations and recording the highest growth rate in six years.

Preliminary estimates showed the GDP growth rate doubled from the 0.2 percent expansion seen in the fourth quarter of 2013.

In the first three months of 2014, the GDP accelerated for the fifth consecutive quarter and marked a third straight quarter of economic expansion.

On a yearly basis, the economy rose 0.6 percent, up from a 0.2 percent contraction in the previous quarter, marking the strongest annual rise in three years. An improvement in domestic demand was enough to offset lower exports.
