US Durable Goods Orders Surge in March

New orders for manufactured durable goods increased 2.6 percent to $234.8 billion in March following a 2.1 percent growth in February.

Excluding transportation, new orders increased 2.0 percent. Excluding defense, new orders increased 1.8 percent. 

Transportation equipment, also up two consecutive months, led the increase, $2.8 billion or 4.0 percent to $74.1 billion.  

Shipments of manufactured durable goods, up two consecutive months, increased 1.1 percent. This followed a 1.0 percent February increase. 

Nondefense new orders for capital goods rose 7.1 percent.
