Hong Kong Unemployment Rate Stays at 3.3%


Hong Kong seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained steady at 3.3 percent for the ninth consecutive period in January to March 2015.

Comparing January - March 2015 with the previous period, the number of unemployed persons (not seasonally adjusted) increased by around 5 500 to 127 300 from 121 800. The number of underemployed persons decreased by around 3 800 to 53 500 (1.4 percent of the labour force) from 57 300.

Increases in the unemployment rate were mainly observed in the construction and retail sectors, while decreases were mainly seen in the real estate, and information and communications sectors. As to the underemployment rate, decreases were mainly observed in the decoration, repair and maintenance for buildings, and transportation sectors.

Total employment in January - March 2015 decreased by around 6 400 to 3 801 100 from 3 807 500 in December 2014 - February 2015. Meanwhile, the labour force in January - March 2015 was 3 928 400, about the same (3 929 300) in the previous period.
